Biography

Elizabeth was born in Aug 1857 in Tonica, Illinois. to George Keller and Tirza McGrew. She passed away in 1949.

On 9 Jul 1860 in Eagle Township, LaSalle, Illinois, Alice Keller 3 b. IL, appeared in the household of her parents, George Keller, 30 farmer $1600 real estate $500 personal estate b. OH, and Thursa [Tirzah] Keller, 35 b. OH, with her brother Cyrus, 5 b. IL, and her uncle Johnson Keller, 20 farm laborer b. IL.[1]

The 1870 census of Eden, LaSalle, Illinois reported Geo. W. Keller (coded Kelles) 41, carpenter, and Thurza Keller 41, keeping house, with Cyrus 15, Alice 12, and Euclid 8. George owned $1500 in real estate and $4,000 in personal estate.[2]

Alice's mother, Tirzah McGrew Keller, died age 50 in 1875 in Tonica, LaSalle, Illinois, and so did not appear in the 1880 census, which reported George Keller 51, with Alice 22 and Euclid 19. George was a carpenter and Alice was keeping house.[3]

As a young man, Henry Veatch was "a splendid specimen.... He stood over six feet in height and could stand and jump over anything he could put his chin over. He was the first of the family to go west. [After 1880, he] went to Kansas and worked on the farm of Mr. Benjamin McGrew in Sedgwick County. There he met and fell in love with Elizabeth Alice Keller, niece of McGrew's," who was living with the family at that time.[4]

Henry W Veatch 27 of Furley P.O., Kansas married Elizabeth A Keller 30 of Wichita, Kansas on 23 Feb 1888 at Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas.[5]

Alice was a little tiny thing, according to a granddaughter. She played the organ in church, and taught school before her marriage.

The 1895 state census of Payne, Sedgwick, Kansas, P.O. Greenwich, reported Henry Veach (sic) 34 and E. A. Veach 37, with 3 children: Roy L. 6, Elmer A. 4 and Lily M. 1.[6]

The family moved from Kansas to Oklahoma about 1898.

The 1900 census of Van, Woods, Oklahoma reported Henry W Veatch 42 (b. May 1860 MO to parents b. IL/IN, m. 12, farmer) and Elisabeth A Veatch 42 (b. Aug 1857 IL to parents b. OH, m. 12, 6 children/5 living), with Roy L 11, Elmer A 8, Lillie M 6, Bertha M 3, Ralph w 0.[7]

Once the Presbyterian Church of Ringwood, Oklahoma was founded in 1908, Henry and Elizabeth Veatch had their 1888 marriage recorded in the Session's Register of Marriages. In fact, marriages one through ten occurred before the church began.[8]

The 1910 census of Van, Major, Oklahoma reported Henry W Veatch 49 and Elisabeth A Veatch 52 with children: Elmer A 19, Lillie M 16, Bertha M 12 and Ralph W 9.[9]

The 1920 census of Van, Major, Oklahoma reported Henry W Veatch 59 and Elizabeth A Veatch 63 with Lily M 26, Bertha W 22 and Ralph W 19.[10]

The 1930 census of Van, Major, Oklahoma reported Henry W Veatch 69 and Elizabeth A Veatch 72 with daughter Lillie M 36.[11]

The 1940 census of Van, Major, Oklahoma reported H W Veatch 79 and Elizabeth Veatch 82, with daughter Betha Doll (coded Dall) 42, widow.[12]

Alice Veatch passed away on 14 Nov 1949. According to her obituary in The Enid Morning News, "Elizabeth Alice Veatch, 92, long-time resident of Ringwood, died Sunday night at her home in Ringwood. She came to that community in 1898 from Butler county, Kans., and was a member of the Ringwood Presbyterian church. "She leaves her husband, H. W. Veatch, of the home; three sons, Roy of Chicago, Elmer of Ringwood and Ralph of Tulsa; a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Doll, of Ringwood; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and a half-brother, Charley Keller of California."[13]

E. Alice Veatch was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Meno, Major, Oklahoma.[14]
