Robert was born Robert Churchman Kellett. He assumed the name Long after the last 'Long' heiress of the original family, Sarah Long died unmarried in 1797, and left the Dunston estate to him.
He was the only son of Anna, daughter of William Churchman of Mangreen and wife of Robert Cowan Kellett who was herself descended from the Long family. The Long (Dunston) and Churchman (Mangreen and Illington and Norton, Suffolk) estates were thus combined in Robert Churchman Long and his descendants.
