Biography

Richard was born in 1838 in Hanalei in the Kingdom of Hawaii. He often used his Hawaiian name, Rick Kamaki. He was employed as a seaman in the late 1850s, later meeting his future wife, Maria Ho'opio Nui in Maui. They had one daughter, Kaleiho'opio Kellett, in 1857. Maria passed away in April of 1859. Sometime in the next ten years, he met Kauia of Wainiha and they had one son, Leialoha Thomas Kellett. Upon the death of his father, the Lanihuli property was left to Richard, but he passed it on to Pa'alua Danson Kellett through adverse possession. He passed away in May of 1878, at Wainiha.
