Biography

John might have been born in Greenville Co, SC, where his father was documented in 1790-1820 (zoned as Pendleton in 1820). In about 1824, the family moved to McMinn Co, TN.

In 1853, there was a John Kelly (heir) who was named in the pension file of William Kelly. Said John was listed near the grandchildren. And unlike the other children his exact date of birth was not provided. Therefore, the John Kelly, age 38, might have been a grandson. Either way, his presumed father was documented in Rutherford, NC, in 1781-1782. He was in Greenville, SC, before 1790 and through 1820 (zoned Pendleton in 1820). In about 1824, most of the family moved to McMinn Co, TN. On 29 Apr 1843, William Kelly's pension file provides children's dates of birth. John died after 7 April 1853, when named as a surviving heir. The claim is via Elizabeth Kelly, the deceased widow of William Kelly (1758-1837). It states surviving children Samuel, Elizabeth, Judy, Dinah, William, Richard, Alsey, and John Kelly were entitled. This aligns with the records for this Kelly family, who were in McMinn County, not McMinnville, Warren County.[1][2]

Research Notes

Conflation of three men named William Kelly - Conflation is an issue for at least three William Kellys located in GA. Two had Rev War Pension Files; one man in Cass Co, GA, and the other man in Wilkes Co, GA. The third William Kelly was in Wayne Co, GA. A pension file has not been located for William Kelly of Wayne Co, GA.

Fortunately, these men have primary records that document the names of their wives.

  1. William Kelly - died bef 29 May 1837, in Wayne Co, GA (coastal area). He signed his LWT on 22 Jun 1836 and it was proven on 29 May 1837, in Wayne Co, GA.
    • LWT names children; John Kelly executor, Bestey McQuinney, George Kelly executor, Kesiah Johns, Mary Johns, Vicy Kelly, Mahaley Herrin.
  2. William Kelley Sr - died on 27 Dec 1837, in Cass Co, GA (north GA). This family was in McMinn Co, TN, right before moving to Cass Co, GA. William died shortly after the move. A sworn copy of Bible naming children found in 78 page Rev War pension file. He served in NC and SC. See also Elizabeth (Singleton) Kelley (abt.1764-1850).

  3. William Kelly - died on 29 Jun 1847, in Wilkes Co, GA (GA/SC border). He too was a Rev War Soldier, but he served in VA. He was being paid for Rev War Pension in GA. One record indicates Elbert Co, GA. His widow was named Lucinda Whitmond.

I removed birth (Chesterfield, SC) and death (Wayne Co, GA) locations as they do not align with records for John in this profile. If a John Kelly died in Wayne Co, GA, he likely was related to the set of Kellys documented in Wayne Co, GA. If this profile is intended for John Kelly, son of William Kelley Sr (1758-1837), then he was not born in Chesterfield, SC. William Kelly explained where he lived throughout his life, and it does not include Chesterfield, SC. See his pension file.
