Biography

Marion B. Kelley was the only child of Joel and his first wife, Nancy (Nichols) Kelley. She was born, “Marrion Maria Kelley” in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1840. [1] Her mother died when Marion was still an infant; her father married Mary Elizabeth Norris, who became Marion’s stepmother. Marion was educated in the public schools of Corning, Steuben County, New York.

She first married Marshall G. Burton on February 5, 1862 in Corning. They lived in Lockport, Niagara County, New York, where Marshall Burton worked for the railroad. According to Marshall’s obituary, they had an adopted daughter [Eva M. Burton], who was mentioned in the following newspaper reports, and eventually married Charles Reynolds.

Mrs. Marian Carter of Lockport, Mrs. Charles Reynolds and daughter of Corning and George Preston, Sr., spent Friday in town calling on numerous friends. Mrs. Carter is a native of Prattsburgh and later, as the wife of Marshall Burton, had many friends here who were glad to meet her again after an interim of many years. [3]

For many years her father lived with her family.

On Friday forenoon at Lockport, NY, Joel Kelly, formerly of Corning, was killed by falling from a tree while picking cherries. A limb broke, and he fell about ten feet, to the ground, dying in fifteen minutes of hemorrhage. He resided with his son-in-law, Marshall G. Burton, Erie locomotive engineer, and was seventy-four years of age. He was formerly for a series of years a resident of Corning, and kept a hotel which stood on East Market Street, south side, corner of Cedar street. – Corning Journal, Corning, NY, Thursday, July 15, 1886.

Her husband died in 1888. Marion married Charles Carter of Lockport on January 24, 1896. She survived her second husband and spent an active useful life.

She has been and is closely identified with the woman’s branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and with the charitable work of that noble order. She is a member of Myrtle Lodge, Daughters of Rebekah, and has passed all the chairs of that Lodge. She is also affiliated with the Daughters of America, and has served in all the chairs of that lodge. She was one of the lady managers of the Odd Fellows Home, and is a member of the Lockport City Hospital Association. She is a woman of charitable and benevolent impulse, and contributes liberally to the support and upbuilding of the institutions in which she is interested. Her residence is 86 Park Avenue, Lockport, New York. [4]

Marion Carter died March 18, 1931; she was buried in the Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport.

CARTER – Funeral services for Marion Burton Carter were held from The Prudden Funeral Home, No. 242 Genesee street, Saturday afternoon, March 21st, at two o’clock, Rev. G. A. Jameson of the Second Presbyterian church officiating. Then followed the beautiful and impressive Rebekah service with several selections by Mrs. Howard Disinger, Myrtle Lodge No. 84, Daughters of Rebekah, and Zura Zuanna No. 25, L. O. T. O., of which the deceased was a member, attended the services in a body. The following members of Canton Niagara, No. 7, acted as bearers: John Gammock, Harry Burch, John Nieman, William Maull, Roy C. Kohler and Samuel Argue. Interment was made in Cold Springs cemetery. -- Lockport Union-Sun and Journal, Monday Evening, March 28, 1931.
