The couple and their infant daughter Sarah migrated from Dalry, Kirkcudbright, Scotland on the ill fated William Roger with other members of Elizabeth's Hastings family. Sarah died on the voyage prior to the arrival in Australia on 29 September 1838.[3]
Stories within the family say that Elizabeth separated from Robert not long after they were released from quarantine in Australia. It is believed she commenced a de facto relationship with convict James Taylor by 1840 and had 8 children to him.
The circumstances that meant that Robert was free to remarry are not currently known however, Robert married Mary Timney, at Bolong in New South Wales on 14 October 1858.[4]
He passed away 10 July 1885, at Callan Park, New South Wales.[5]
Research Notes
Some family researchers say that Elizabeth separated from Robert not long after they were released from quarantine in Australia. They say she commenced a de facto relationship with convict James Taylor by 1840 and had 8 children to him. The children were: James Taylor 1840 -1914, Joseph Taylor 1841, Mary Ann Taylor 1843 - 1929, William Taylor 1845 - 1897, Phoebe Taylor 1847, Joseph Taylor 1848, Thomas Taylor 1851 - 1902 and Mary Phoebe Taylor 1854. The story goes that Joseph and Elizabeth eventually married 1853 in Mudgee Wesleyan Methodist Church, but the marriage was annulled. In 1855 Joseph married Edith (Dellar) Wilmont a widow and started another family. Elizabeth dies on 10 Aug 1877 and is buried in Rylstone Cemetery next to son William. Her headstone reads "To the memory of Elizabeth Kelly who departed this life August 10th aged 67 years Not dead but sleepeth" On Elizabeth's death certificate it states that her husband is Robert Kelly but it is her Taylor children that attend to the burial. Information is from an online article that also references Robert Kelly's marriage to Mary in 1858 and his death in 1885 at Callan Park, accessed 22 Aug 2020 at http://mhfamilyhistory.pbworks.com/w/page/36925904/Elizabeth%20Hastings%201812
