Biography

Augusta Shannon Kellogg was born on September 3, 1865, in Tallmadge, Michigan, to Edward John Kellogg and Arimathea.[1][2] She was child number five, and second daughter to the family.[3] She grew up in Jamestown Township, Ottawa, Michigan, where her father owned 80-acres in section 2 of Jamestown twp, approximately where Quincy St. and 8th Ave are now.[4][5]

She married John Ralzey Brainard in Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana on 24 Sep 1889.[6][7][8][9] They had six children, five of whom lived; the oldest two, Mary Ethel, 7 Feb 1890 (died 10 Aug 1938) and Vera Helen, 26 Oct 1891 (died 1969) were born in Jamestown.[10][11][12] In 1894 they relocated to Orangeville, Barry County, Michigan and finally to Prairieville, to her husband's family farm.[13] The next four children were all born in Prairieville Township; Iolin Genevieve, 15 Apr 1896 (died 9 Mar 1952); Russell Kellogg, 22 Jul 1897 (died 19 Mar 1974) ; Unnamed Baby Boy, 5 Nov 1900, who died rheumatic fever on 03 Jan 1901; and Olin J., 11 Dec 1902 (died 18 Feb 1991).[14][15][16][17] [18] Her husband, John, died of "acute Bronchitis" on 19 Oct 1906. [19] At this point the two oldest girls left the house for jobs in Jackson, Michigan, and a close look at plats, comparing 1897 Atlas to 1913 Atlas, one can see that Augusta has been given 20 acres across from "G.E. Brainard's" 156-acres.[20]. George E. Brainard was a younger brother to John R., and it seems likely that the farm was either sold to him or reverted to him in a will, which has not been found. Regardless, Augusta raised Iolin, Russell (Kelly), and Olin at a small farm across the street.[21] By 1920, Augusta is living in Otsego, Allegan County with her daughter Vera, son-in-law Vern, granddaughter, and son, Russell "Kelly" Kellogg, who is back from WWI and disabled.[22]

She died in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan on 4 July 1923.[23][2] She is buried next to her husband in Prairieville Cemetery, Barry County, Michigan.[24]

Research Notes

  • Birth Records did not start for Ottawa county until 1867.
  • The Barry County Deeds does not have any online access for what happened with the property. The closest found was a plat Atlas for Prairieville twp, Barry County for 1945, which still has initials A (H?) B in the location for Augusta Brainard's house. G.E. Brainard still listed for the 150+ acres across the street.[25]
