Biography

Charles William Kellogg was born on December 6, 1815, in Middlesex, Vermont. He was the son of Ira Kellogg and Nancy Mather. He married Jerusha Prior on February 12, 1837 in Portage County, Ohio. They had ten children during their marriage. He died of apoplexy on October 27, 1859, in Miles, Iowa, at the age of 43, and was buried in Van Buren, Iowa.

From his wife's obituary:

After meeting the privations and bearing the toils of pioneer life in Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg came to Iowa in 1853 to establish their home with the pioneers of this common wealth. They returned again to Ohio in 1855, but the attractions of the west were alluring, so they made further preparations for an Iowa home and landed here the second time in 1857. They bravely set about to lay the foundations of future prosperity, but the following year the hand of Death was laid upon the husband and father, leaving the mother to care for the interests of four children.
