Research Notes

Birth: Dates vary in people's research - 1841 is based on info on the birth cert of his age on John Jospeh (his eldest son) for which he was the informant. Can't find BDM record. John Morpeth says 1840.

Immigration: May have arrived in 1846 with mother and siblings after his father received his ticket of leave.

Education: witnessed his sister-in-law, Isabella's, marriage - and signed his own marriage cert - with 'his mark' (X). Also Margaret's death cert.

Residence: Mylora, listed on Thomas' baptism cert.

Residence: Sold property to Mr Armour in 1905-1906.

Residence: Hall's PO Directory - William Kelly (Chidowla) Farmer, Bookham, Bogolong, selector, 1895-1902.

Residence: Electroral Rolls 1903 - 1905 - William & Margaret, William J., Robert A (Chidowla). Rolls 1906 - William, William J., Robert A (Chidowla).

Residence: Sold Lot 285 Bowning to Mr Hannaford in 1912.

Prince of Wales Hotel appears as residence in several death notices on Trove and is listed as being at Waverley-road, Woollahra (last reference to it I can find is a licence transfer in 1935). Apparently Waverley Road Woollahra, a name once applied to that section of present-day Oxford Street which lies between Centennial Square and Nelsen Street.

Death notice: KELLY.-October 20, 1921, at Prince of Wales' Hotel, Woollahra, William Kelly, late of Yass, aged 88 years. R.I.P. ~ The Sydney Morning Herald, Friday 21 October 1921.

"My grandfather, William Kelly, was a tall, distinguished and very lovable man, and practised as a vet. He was possibly the first vet to practise in Australia." (Olive Styles quoted in the book "A Blackboard in the Bush: Pudman Creek School & Public Education in NSW" by Philip Hobbs).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
