OBITUARY. Mr Alfred Fetherstonhaugh Kelly, who died at his home, Barwonleigh, Inverleigh, Victoria, on December 9, from pneumonia, was a son of John Hubert Kelly, of Lunestown, county Westmeath, Ireland. He was born in 1846, and arrived in Victoria some twenty years later, first venturing into pastoral pursuits in western New South Wales. Leaving there, he returned to Kamarooka Station, Elmore, Victoria, where his elder brother, Mr Charles Kelly, was already established. and later purchased The Terricks Station, north of Bendigo. This property he disposed of in 1897, and took over the management of Barwonleigh Estate, in the Western district, which place, he managed up to the time of his death. Mr Kelly was a splendid type of an Irish gentleman, genial, courteous, and considerate to all with whom he came in contact, whether friends, employees or casual acquaintances. He was looked upon as one of the best horse and cattle judges in the State, and at various times acted as judge at Melbourne, Bendigo, and other shows, and his familiar figure at show-grounds and horse parades will be missed by his many friends among the pastoral community. In the hunting and sporting world he was known in the eighties as an owner of steeplechasers and as a keen supporter of the Bendigo Hunt Club. He won steeplechases at Flemington and Warrnambool, and was one of the best amateur riders of his day "over the sticks." Mr Kelly was twice married, his first wife being a daughter of the late Horace Talbot, of Port Fairy who died in 1892, leaving a daughter, now Mrs S. C. Ladbury of Essendon. He married secondly a daughter of the late Dr H. L. Atkinson, of Bendigo, owner of Barwonleigh and various properties in the north of Victoria, who, with one daughter, survives him.
