Biography

Benedictus Marwood Kelly was baptised 28 February 1785 at Holsworthy, Devon , England. [1]

In his will he made provision for the setting up of the Kelly College, as reported in this article from the Western Somerset Free Press Saturday 7th December 1867:

Will of the late Admiral Kelly of Bath.
The Will of Admiral Benedictus Marwood Kelly of Salford House, near Bath, Somerset, was proved in the London Court on the 15th inst. and the personalty sworn under £70,000; the executors appointed being the Earl of Devon, Thomas Dyke Acland M.P., Arthur Kelly, Reginald Kelly, the Rev. John Barlow, and William Marwood Kelly M.D. There is one very striking feature in the disposition of the bulk of his property that of the foundation of a college for the sons of naval officers. After satisfying the condition of his marriage settlement and leaving small annuities to his sisters he leaves the dividends arising from the residence of his personal estate to be applied for the maintenance and education of such a number of boys as the funds will admit preference being first given to the lineal descendants of his grandfather Arthur Kelly of Kelly Devon; then to sons of officers of the navy holding the rank of lieutenant commander, captain, and admiral killed in actual service or otherwise becoming orphans to be admitted at the discretion of the charity trustees. That the instruction shall embody the study of any of the foreign languages, the arts and sciences and literature and the principles of the Church of England; that the scholars should be admitted between the ages of eight and twelve and remain till eighteen; the headmaster to receive a salary of the value of one hundred bushels of wheat and to be paid for the board and maintenance of each scholar. He directs that a sum of £6,000 should be applied in the erection of a suitable building in the county of Devon, to be called “The Kelly College” and appoints the Lord Bishop of Exeter for the time being the visitor of such school. That one, two, or more exhibitions of scholarships of such value as the charity trustees should decide upon , who shall have been upon the foundation and afterwards gone to either of the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge. His mansion and furniture and the landed estate upon the decease of his wife, he has bequeathed to William Marwood Kelly and his heirs. [2]
