ESSEX JUNCTION - MSgt. Lawrence "Sarge" W. Kelly Jr. surrendered peacefully at home to Pulmonary Fibrosis on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.
Larry was born on March 4, 1936, in Flint, Mich. to Anna Corrine (Baker) Kelly and Lawrence W. Kelly Sr.
As a child the family moved to Santa Monica, Calif. where Larry joined the Air Force in 1954. In 1958 he married his wife, Betty (McClintic) Kelly. They had three children, Paul, Scott and Staci. After an honorable and distinguished military career with the Air Force, he retired in 1974. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he went to Sierra College in California where he majored in psychology. In 1976 Larry began his teaching career at Canoga Park High School in California. It was while teaching high school students he earned the nick name of "Sarge," which many of his former students, friends and colleagues still refer to him as. In 1978 he, along with his family, moved to Essex Junction, where he and the late Col. Russ Weller started the AFJROTC VT-781 Program at Essex Junction High School. Through this program Sarge was able to touch the many lives of students, faculty and the community. In 1994 Sarge retired from the high school. In addition to teaching, Larry also enjoyed doing taxes first for H&R Block in Essex Junction and later in his home after retirement. Doing taxes was something he enjoyed doing from 1981 until 2011.
Larry was predeceased by his father, Lawrence W. Kelly Sr.; his mother, Anna Corrine; and his brother, David.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Betty of Essex Junction; son, Paul and his wife, Johanne, of Yuma, Ariz., and their sons, Terrance and Sean; son, Scott of Essex Junction, and his daughter, Ciera; son, Michael; daughter, Staci and her husband, Seth Lasker, of Burlington, and their children, Moriah and Alex Lasker; brother, Richard Kelly of Roseburg, Ore.; and by many members of his extended family. Larry was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 53 years, a loving father to his children, and a loving brother, uncle and friend to many. Sarge will be deeply missed by not only his family, but also by many that knew him.
Larry's final gift was to the University of Vermont, College of Medicine, where he has made an anatomical gift of himself to them.
