By 1920, he was living on the USS Denver stationed in Vallejo, California.[1]
Merrill's first wife was Rebecca Ater. He married Marion A Garton, after Rebecca died in 1925.
In 1930[2] and 1940, Merrill, Marion and their blended family were living in Chula Vista, National Judicial Township, San Diego, California.[3]
His obituary on his Find A Grave memorial page states: "He served with the Chula Vista Police Department for 16 yrs. and also served in the Navy. " His grave is incised CSP US Navy World War I & II.

Merrill passed away in 1952.[4] Burial was in the Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita, San Diego County, California.[5]
