Eric was born 13th January 1893 in Napier New Zealand. He was the eldest son of Robert Kelly and Agnes Lindsay. [1]
His occupation at time of enlistment for WW1 was clerk. His father’s occupation was assistant postmaster, Wellington.
Eric enlisted in the army for WW1 as a private serial number 10/4035. On the 1st April 1916, he was attached to the 11th Reinforcements Wellington Infantry Battalion B Company, which left NZ for Suez, Egypt on the ship Maunganui or Tahiti.
He fought in Samoa and on the Western Front. His rank Quartermaster Sergeant with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. He was to fight in the battle of the Somme and died of wounds on the 26th August 1918 aged 25. He was buried in the Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, Somme, France Grave reference V1.B.15. His death is Registered in New Zealand [2]
Eric was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
It was on the Somme that the majority of New Zealanders were killed or wounded during the First World War. It was here that New Zealand experienced its worst days in military history in terms of loss of life. The Battle of the Somme was New Zealand’s first major engagement on the Western Front. It took a huge toll on the 15,000 members of the New Zealand Division who were involved.
