Biography

Jonathan was the son of [Asa] Peter Kelly and Christine. His brothers were Enoch (about 7 years older) and John Peter (about 4 years younger).

Jonathan was a Canadian Wesleyan Methodist and a Ryanite. MARRIAGES AND CHILDREN • Children of Jonathan & Elizabeth SHAVER (m. ABT 1791) were all born in Beaver Dams, Thorold Twp, Welland, Upper Canada: John KELLEY (ABT 1792), Henry KELLEY (ABT 1793) and Peter Bowman KELLY (1795-1876). • Children of Jonathan & Charity FISHER (m. 1796) were all born in Ancaster Twp, Wentworth, Upper Canada: William E. KELLY (1797-1881:Book/Parkin Cemetery), Isaac KELLY (1799-1863), Hannah [KELLY] Lowrey (1800-1881), Jonathan KELLY (1801- ), Maurice Thomas KELLY (1804-1857), Elizabeth KELLY (1805- ) and Philip KELLEY (1806- 1890). • Children of John & Jane LOWREY (m. 1806) were all born in Ancaster, Wentworth, Upper Canada: Alem KELLY (ABT 1807- ), Uzel Ogden KELLY (ABT 1809- ) and Luke KELLY (ABT 1810- ).

During the War of 1812, Jonathan Kelly served as a private in the 5th Lincoln Militia. Jonathan served from September 22 to 24, 1813 in Captain Peter Bowman’s Company. [1]

From June 19 to 28, 1814, he was employed falling timber at Burlington while serving in Captain Peter Bowman’s Company. [2]

He served from September 6 to 13, 1814 in Lieutenant Ephraim Land’s Detachment. [3]

The 1816 Ancaster Twp. Assessment recorded his name.

DEATH AND BURIAL Jonathan Philip Kelley is buried at Garners Corners Cemetery near his wife Jane Lowrey. Interment.com shows --Kelley, Jane, d. Sep 1, 1849, age 82y 11m 10ds, w/o Jonathan Kelley --Kelley, Jonathan, d. Apr 27, 1852, age 81y 6m 24ds, h/o Jane The inscription on his gravestone says, "In Memory of / Jonathan Kelley / died April 27 1852 / 81 Yrs 6 Mo 24 Days / What! is thy heart a bed of rest, A room reserved for me?
