Marie was born on April 16, 1894 in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Andrew Kelly and Catherine Meehan Kelly. She was baptized at the St. Thomas Parish in Braddock, PA on April 29, 1894. Her godparents were Martin Kelly (father Andrew's brother) and Bridget Mullen. The Baptism Register is signed by J. Faughnan.[1][2]
In 1900, was living in Ward 5, Jefferson Street, New Castle, PA. She had three siblings, Thomas, Patrick and Katerina. Her father, Andrew, is a laborer and has been out of work for 2 months. The family is renting.[3]
Marie was confirmed on June 20, 1908 by Bishop John Regis Canevin at St. Mary Parish in New Castle.[4]
By 1910, the family had moved to Ward 4, Taylor Street, New Castle. Her father is not listed and her mother, Cathryne, is shown as the "head" of the family but with no occupation. However, in the column used to indicate marital status is "M" which indicates married. Marie now had two additional siblings, Ella and James. Her younger sister's name is now listed as Cathryne. Marie is attending school. The family is renting.[5] In later years, Sandee Cartwright Yeager remembered the Kelly relatives "roaring into town as a splash" for family gatherings.[6]
Marie and Roy apparently courted for some time before their engagement. Several articles in the local newspapers report birthday parties and group outings at places like McConnell's Mills and Muddy Creek that they both attended.
An "Application for Marriage License" was completed and a license was issued by the County of Lawrence to Roy and Marie on January 3, 1918. Roy's occupation is Tin Worker and he is 25 years old. His mother, Mary Dean, is deceased. The occupation of his father is steel worker. Question #24: "Is the applicant physically able to support a family?" to which he replies "Yea". Marie's birthplace is Braddock, PA and she is 23 years old, residing in New Castle. No occupation is listed. The residence of the father line just has a checkmark (√). We know that her father, Andrew, had left his family by this time. No occupation is listed for either her mother or father and both were born in Ireland. There is no question #24 about being able to support a family on the female side of the application. The license was issued and they were married the same day by F.F. O'Shea (Father O'Shea) who writes the words "Parish &" before the preprinted "Minister of the Gospel". The St. Mary Parish register shows that Roy Carolum Campbell, non Catholic, married Mariam Florenciam Kelly who had been a member of St. Mary Parish for 10 years. The baptism date for Marie was shown as April 16, 1894 which is different from the date on the St. Thomas baptism register. Witnesses were Thomas Goodman and Catherine Gillespie.[7][8] Although Roy was not a Roman Catholic, it is likely he agreed to have the children raised in the catholic church.[9]
A "License to Wed" was issued to "Florence M. Kelly and Roy in 1918. Marie's parents are listed as Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Kelly of Grant street in New Castle. Roy's residence is Bartram Avenue and he is employed with the American Sheet and Tin Plate company. Roy was living as a boarder with Marie's mother, Catherine Kelly at the time. A correction to Marie's name, address (she was actually living on Bartram Avenue) and implied parents was printed two weeks later.[10][11][12]
Roy and Marie purchased a "new" home on Delaware Avenue following Roy's discharge from military duty at Camp Sherman. Their plan was to occupy the home in early April.[13] In the 1920 census, Marie is now married to Roy Campbell and living in Ward 2, Delaware Avenue, New Castle, PA. They have one daughter, Dorothy. Roy is an "Opener" at the Tin Mill.[14]
By 1930, Marie and Roy have 5 more children, Catharine (sic), Maxine, Charles, Jimmie, and Bernard. They are renting for $28/month in the 4th Ward, 419 Bartram Avenue, New Castle. The census form indicates Marie was married at age 23 in about 1917. Marie shows that her father and mother were born in the Irish Free State. Roy's occupation is listed as a shearman at the tin mill. Interestingly, Marie's mother, Catherine and brothers Patrick and James Francis are on the same census page indicating they live close by. Her brother Thomas and his family are also shown on the same page. Thomas is paying $30 rent. Both families are shown living at 415 Bartram Avenue.[15]
Marie and Roy had a baby boy, John Edward, on November 26, 1934. He died on February 25, 1935 of bronchopneumonia and was buried the next day at St. Mary's Cemetery.[16]
Marie's mother, Catherine, passed away on July 4, 1933. On June 21, 1935 the property at 415 Bartram Avenue was transferred from Catherine's children to Helen R. Weingartner (likely a realtor) and then immediately transferred to Marie and Roy Campbell. The first transfer deed indicated the property "being the same premises of which Catherine A. Kelly died seized testate on the fourth day of July 1933 and by her last will and testament entered of record in the Registrar's Office of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in Will Book Vol. 19, page 20 devised to her children ...".[17][18]
The 1940 census seems to show that Marie completed only 7 years of school. Roy's occupation is Shearman, industry steel and income in 1939 of $900. Children listed are the same as above plus Russell P age 2. Dorothy's occupation is clerk in a drug store, Catherine is a "New Worker" and Maxine is a decorator in pottery (likely referring to the Shenango Pottery in New Castle). Also living with them is Marie's brother, Patrick, who is shown as a laborer in the bronze industry (perhaps referring to Johnson Bronze Plant).[19]
For the 1950 census, Roy and Marie shared the house on Bartram Avenue with two of their children & their families. Many of the children lived in the house with their families over the years. In 1950, Roy was 58 and Marie was 56. Roy was a supervisor for a pottery ware manufacturer, likely what we knew as "The Pottery". He had worked 40 hours the prior week, had worked 52 weeks the prior year and made $2800 in 1949. The highest grade he had attended was 10th grade which he did not finish. He served in WWI. Marie worked in the home and children Bernard age 20 and Eileen 18 worked "OT" or other. Son Russ age 12 did not work. Also living in the house, likely on the 2nd floor was John "Jack" Cartwright, son-in-law age 32, daughter Maxine 28 and their children Sandra 8, John Jr. 3 and Joseph 10 months. Jack was a foreman at the pottery, worked 45 hours the previous week, 52 weeks the previous year and made $3,000 in 1949. He completed 12th grade and served in WWII. Likely on the 3rd floor lived son James 23 and daughter-in-law Virginia 24. Both James and Ginger worked at the pottery. James worked 30 hours as a "Batting Out" and Ginger worked 16 hours as a dish inspector.[20]
Marie passed away at 62 years of age at 12:57PM on April 10, 1956 at the New Castle hospital following a one week illness. Cause of death was myocardial infarction (heart attack) with pneumonitis a contributing factor. There was an autopsy performed. She was in the hospital for eight days.[21] She was at the hospital doing her volunteer work when she had the heart attack. She had not been expected to die but she never came back home.[22] She was a member of St. Mary's church and also a member of the New Castle Hospital Emergency Club, the New Castle Hospital Auxiliary, the C.D. of A. (Catholic Daughters of America), the Lillie Flower Club and the Ladies of St. Mary. She was survived by husband, Roy, and children: Mrs. Jack Davis (Dorothy), Mrs. George W. Murphy (Mary) of Del Paso Heights, CA., Mrs. John Cartwright (Maxine), James, Bernard, Mrs. Thomas Reeher (Eileen), Russell, 16 grandchildren; two brothers, James Kelly, Lake Peekshell, NY. and Patrick Kelly, California. A son, John Campbell, died in 1934 and son Charles died in 1952. Arrangements were made by McGonigle Funeral Home and Msgr. Francis M. McCarter conducted Requiem High Mass in St. Mary's church and she was buried in St. Mary Cemetery on April 13 with all rites. The attending priest at the burial was Fr. Schwartz.[23][24]
