Biography

(From our Correspondent.) DEATH OF MR. PATRICK KELLY. It is with feelings of deep regret that we learn of the death of Mr. Patrick Kelly, of The Willows, Michelago, which sad event took place on Sunday afternoon, 9th instant, after a long and painful illness extending over some months. He was the eldest surviving son of the late Mr. Patrick Kelly, of The Willows, and who was one of the very first pioneering sons who settled on Monaro over 80 years ago when provisions had to be carted from Sydney by bullock teams.

The late Mr. Kelly carried on the occupation of grazier in partnership with his brother Fergus. It was only three months ago that the latter died, and the day after his burial, Patrick took to his room and never again regained strength. The passing of his life-long companion seemed to have a marked effect on him; they lived together and died together. The late Mr. Kelly was 67 years of age, and had not enjoyed the best of health for many years, and during that time had consulted many of Sydney's most eminent specialists. He leaves one brother, John, and two sisters, Mrs. Patrick Sheedy, of Glen Innes, and Miss Johannah Kelly, of Michelago. During his long and painful illness deceased kept up with wonderful fortitude, never once neglecting his duties. He was most cheerful and lived a very peaceful life, always taking an active part in his church, and gave some most valuable gifts to the local church. The Rev. Father O' Donohue was unremitting in his attention and often paid two visits to his bedside daily.

The remains of deceased were on Monday afternoon taken to the church enclosed in a handsome English oak casket of a hundred pieces, with double raised lid and heavy silver mountings, made by Mr. James Allen of Cooma, who carried out the funeral arrangements. After the customary prayers the cortège left the church at 2 p.m., the pall-bearers being Messrs. H. Lawler, C. Cotter, J. D. Shanahan, Tom Mc Ternan. The funeral was well attended despite the heavy rain that was falling. The Rev. M. O'Donohue officiated at the graveside, this being the closing scene of one of our best citizens.[1]
