John (MacKelly) was born in ABT 1717 in Peeblesshire, Scotland. He moved to north of England In 1745 with the Jacobite Uprising and settled in Cumbria. In 1752, year after his father's death he arrived with his mother Susannah, wife Elizabeth Bessie and 5 of his children (Asa Peter, William James, John Bessey, Elizabeth and Susannah, all born in England) in America, following his brothers Samuel, Abraham and Enoch to settle in New Jersey. John lost the 'Mac' in his surname and had 2 more children Jesse and Mary in New Jersey. He died March 4, 1758 in Woodbridge Twp, Middlesex Co, New Jersey.
No reference to this family either in Peebleshire or New Jersey. As information about them was from "Irish Immigrants to North America", the assumption would be that they were Irish not Scottish.
