His marker is one of a series of reproduction stones placed in a row in an area of Kelsey family stones. With two exceptions, each is marked only with a first name and date. These correspond to the names and dates of second and third generation Kelsey family members who died in Killingworth, now Clinton.

According to descendant Lucia Finley, "John Kelsey was born 20 Oct 1671 in Killingworth, Middlesex, CT the son of John & Hannah Disborough Kelsey. He married Phebe Crane 22 Jun 1697 in Killingworth, CT. Their children included: Daniel, Isaac, Bethia, Nathan, Jerusha, John, Phebe, Lydia, Martha, Solomon & Hannah Kelsey. John died 19 Sep 1750 in Killingworth CT. His father John is also buried in Indian River Cemetery."
