Biography

Elizabeth “Betsey” B Kelsey was born in Connecticut in 1809. She was the daughter of Ephraim Kelsey and his second wife, Elizabeth Hartley Boone. It’s likely that Betsey’s middle name was Boone.

On 22 August 1827, Betsey married James Porter Chittenden, the son of Cornelius Chittenden and Rachel Porter, in Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Sometime in the early 1840s, the family moved first to Illinois and then to Missouri.

According to Talcott, and confirmed by the 1850 census, James and Betsey's children were:

• James Porter Chittenden Jr 1828-1875), m. Susan Head;
• Mary Ann Chittenden (1830-1903), m. Benjamin Mead;
• Orson Kelsey Chittenden (1832-1917), m. Mary Elizabeth June Searcy;
• Henry Hatfield Chittenden (1834-1896), m. Katharine Thomaszene Heckle;
• Elizabeth H Chittenden (1836-1916), m. William True;
• William Stillwell Chittenden (1838-1873), m. Amelia Brown;
• Albert Cornelius (1843-1917), m. 1st Mary, m. 2nd America Ellen Evans; and
• John W (1847-?).

James died in Rocheport, Missouri in 1853, and Betsey was still living on their Missouri farm in the 1860 and 1870 census. However, in 1880 Betsey was counted in her son Albert’s household in Ventura County, California. Albert was also caring for the children of his deceased brother, William Stillwell Chittenden.

Betsey’s death date and place is unknown, but she has, thus far, not been found in any records subsequent to 1880. She may have died in California, or she may have moved on to Oregon with Albert and died there. Her gravesite has not been found.
