Joseph Kemp was born in 1750 in Bladen County, North Carolina. He was the son of Richard Kemp and [[Piggott-104 | Susannah Piggott]. The family were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and had moved to Carver's Creek Meeting, Bladen County, North Carolina, after August 26, 1749, from Fairfax County, Virginia (Goose Creek MM). [1]
When Joseph's parents moved to Snow Camp, Cane Creek MM, in Orange County (became Chatham in 1774, then Alamance Co. in 1849), in September 1753, Joseph went with them. He married Miss Wilmett Haworth, b: about 1753, daughter of Stephan & Rachel (Beeson) Haworth, on April 18, 1771 in Cane Creek MM, Orange, North Carolina. The couple lived in North Carolina and had the following children:[2]
Susanna Kemp b: 4 JUN 1774 in Cane Creek MM, Chatham, NC
Rachel Ruth Kemp b: 1775 in Cane Creek MM, Chatham, NC
John Kemp b: 14 FEB 1778 in Chatham Co., North Carolina, USA
Wilmett Kemp b: ca. 1783 in Rocky River, Chatham, NC, USA
Joab Kemp b: 12 MAY 1791 in Chatham Co., North Carolina, USA
Josiah Kemp b: 5 OCT 1794 in Chatham Co., North Carolina, USA
Joseph Kemp's exact date of death is not known and no Find A Grave memorial has been found for him but there was a Joseph "Kimp" (sic=Kemp), over 50 years old, living near Siler City, Chatham Co., North Carolina, USA, on the 1820 US Census. As there was no woman living with him who was over 40 years old, it can be assumed he was a widower, living with several adult children. [3]
