Thomas was the son of George T. and Elizabeth (Musgrove) Kemp and the brother of William, Ella N., Betty, Catherine "Kate", Virginia M. "Jennie," Charley, Rosa Maud, Noah P. Kemp and Edward L. Kemp. His father was a farmer in Callaway County, Missouri, and Thomas followed in his father's footsteps. Thomas married Fannie D. Rosson on February 4, 1884. Their children were Sallie, Julia, and Robert. Thomas was a member of the Millers Creek Presbyterian Church in Millersburg, Missouri.
