Bronislawa “Bertha” Kempa was born February 6, 1894 in Pietnice, Poland[1] (then Austria) to Jan and Mary Kempa.[2] She had at least one brother named Andrzej Kempa, who immigrated to the United States before she did.[3]
Bertha Kempa came to America in 1908, departing from Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Finland on November 24 and arriving at the Port of New York on December 9. She was joining her brother Andrzej in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.[4]
She married Aleksander Buczek on February 8, 1921 (he was naturalized February 2, 1925).
Bertha became a naturalized citizen of the United States in June 1927. Listed on her naturalization application is the following information: DOB 2/6/1894 Pietnice Poland; address: 2218 Yelland Street, Philadelphia; husband: Aleksander Buczek, paster, dob 3/21/1896; marriage date: 2/8/1921; husband naturalized 2/2/1925. The only thing of note is that she indicates “no” on the line next to children. Because of the cross-referencing of all of the documents I’ve found along with the information we knew to be true, I believe this was probably a clerical error or mistranslation.[5]
The 1940 US Census listed the occupants of 201 E Wishart, Philadelphia as Aleksander (44), Bertha (46), Walter (26), Thaddeus (15), and Helen (11).[6]
