Biography

Robert Kempe, eldest son of Bartholomew, succeeded to the Gissing estates in 1554 on his fathers decease.

Robert Kemp, Esq. married first Elizabeth, Smythwyn, of Buckinghamshire, by whom he had 2 sons and 3 daughters.[1],

i. Richard (heir)

ii. John of Antingham

iii. Margaret, who married Thomas Rouse (Rous or Rowse), of Cranford, in Suffolk

iv. Ann who married Anthony Drury

v. Dorothy, the wife of Norton [1]

Note: Bartholomew, Genehide, Edward & John died as children.[1]

Robert Kempe's second wife was also named Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund De Grey of Merton[1], who's sister Margaret had already married Edward Kempe, brother to Robert.[1]

Note: In Visitations of Norfolk, Elizabeth's birth name is "Grey"[2]

They had 4 sons and one daughter;[1]

iii. William

iv. Edward

v. Elizabeth.

He purchased the adwowson of Gissing church in 1574.[1] With Charles De Grey, John Hastings, Jennings Bygott, and others, he founded a free chapel at Moulton, Norfolk, the deed concerning which bearing his signature and seal is preserved at the British Museum (ADD. Charters 874).[1]

He also re-roofed Gissing Hall, the account of which, with the cost and his domestic expenses, from about 1584 to his decease in 1594, is entered in the Museum with other documents.[1]

Robert Kempe, of Gissing died April 27 1594, and was buried with his wives at Gissing, where there is a monument to his and their memory with his arms displayed impaling theirs (wives). (pg 26 of Hitchin-kemp..history of the kemp and kempe families of great Britain...etc).
