October 12, 1999 - e-mail from Butch Kemper:
My aunt Wanda who now lives in our family's home place found a box stuck in the rafters containing old papers that belonged to George Washington Kemper and later Elwood Kemper last Sunday and she has given them to me. The most precious item is the pocket book (Not Wallet) of George Washington Kemper. It contains notes in his hand writing from 1853 through 1877. I had always heard that he went west one time and was gone for several months but I never heard the reason for the trip. I still don't know the reason but this pocket book contains a list of his expenses. It states that he left Buchanon Virginia( this is the place that Rhoda told me that he had lived and buried Charles Willie) in 1853. The first leg of his trip appears to have been to the "ten mile house" where he must have spent the night with friends since there was no recorded charge. Then it shows that he spent the night at Crows Tavern which was a famous stage coach tavern on the Kanahaw Trail between Covington and Sweet Springs Virginia. The book shows that he paid Colonel Crow(Who was a well known inn keeper in our local history) 63 cents for his nights lodging and meals. It goes on to tell of his paying tolls to cross a bridge on the Kanahaw River and lists various nights lodging at Charleston, Cincinnati, Louisville, New
Albany Indiana and so on. He apparently took the train at some point since all of these cities are on
the old C & O route. There are receipts made to him dated in the 1850s in Buchanon and his signature witnessing the mark (X) of Elizabeth Craft in December 1878 on Blue Spring Run(Potts Creek Area of Alleghany County). There is so much to go through and some of it is very fragile.

.
