Note N1691Kendall DNA Study. 1
John Sherman Kendall, 74, of Lebanon, beloved husband of Martha Jean (Field) Kendall, passed away Monday (Sept. 9, 2013) at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 13, 1939 in Detroit, MI, he was a son of the late Howard Amos and Eleanor Dallas (Bishop) Kendall. After graduating from Denby High School in Detroit, he attended the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961, followed by a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1962. During his university years he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
In 1962 he took a position at United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, working in various supervisory engineering positions, including Chief of Advanced Manufacturing Systems. In 1964 he received a Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and in 1984 a Master’s Degree in Management from RPI. In 1982 he received a patent for a composite laminated window for electron beam guns. 1988 he moved to UTC’s Otis Elevator Company in Farmington, where he directed Otis’ worldwide projects of advanced technology and research. He served as chairman of Otis patent committee. His work experience took him to locations in Europe and Asia. He retired in January of 1999. For over 20 years he served as a judge for the Connecticut Science Fair, and for 16 years was a judge for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, as a representative of UTC. His interest in science and engineering inspired his sons to pursue science and technical careers.
On June 30, 1962 he married Martha Field in the First Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They resided for some years in East Hartford, then Vernon, where they welcomed the birth of their three sons. In 1972 they embarked on their lifelong project, purchasing a derelict center chimney 18th century colonial house in Lebanon, spending over 30 years in its restoration, creating a beautiful home and gardens.
John was a devoted genealogist, researching the Kendall and Bishop families, contributing to DNA studies of the Kendall family. His interest led to a membership in the Connecticut Sons of the American Revolution, and was president of the Huntington Branch. He had a deep interest in Dr. William Beaumont, “father of digestion” and his boyhood home in Lebanon, serving as a docent there for many years.
He served in many capacities for the First Congregational Church at Lebanon, where he was a member for over 30 years.
From his childhood days, he was a constant stamp and coin collector.
In addition to his loving wife of 51 years, he is survived by three sons and their spouses, John and Christine Kendall of Preston, Dr. Richard and Karen of Salt Lake City, UT and Brian and Jill of Lebanon; two grandchildren, Cassidy and Zoe; and numerous extended family members and friends.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard.
A Memorial Service will be observed 3 PM Sunday (Sept. 29th) at the First Congregational Church of Lebanon (corner of Rtes. 207 and 87). There are no calling hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Church, P.O. Box 125, Lebanon 06249 or to the Lebanon Historical Society, 856 Trumbull Hwy., Lebanon 06249, or the University of Michigan Engineering Fund.
Care of arrangements has been entrusted to the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester.
