Biography

Joshua Kenagy St., otherwise known as Yost, was born ~1755 in Bethel (now Swatara) Twp., Lancaster (now Lebanon) County, Pennsylvania. His early career was closely bound with that of his brother Ulrich, both living with their mother Magdalena, and being in the Lancaster Co Militia together. Yost was fined 47 pounds 10 shillings for non-performance of military duties in 1777-1778. Inb 1782 he was listed in the Lancaster county Militia. There is no evidence that he ever actively engaged in these practices. He was taxed in Lancaster Co. in 1779 and in Maiden Creek, Berks Co., in 1780 along with his mother and Ulrich. On March 7, 1779 Yost Kanaegy and Anna Schirck were married, probably at home, by traveling Evangelical Lutheran pastor, Reb. John Casper Soever (1896). Yost was first taxed in 1779 at age 25 and by 1782 owned 170 acres of what was probably the Monroe Valley property formerly owned by his father. This was in Lancaster Co. until 1785 when it was made part of Dauphin Co. He owned land in Dauphin (now Lebanon Co.) by 1800. In 1800 and 1810 Joshua was on the census records for East Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co. with five children. The Monroe Valley property was sold in 1820.
On Feb 29, 1812, Joshua Kenega of Chester Co. bought 313 acres, six miles east of Carlisle, near Shippensburg, in Hopewell Twp., Cumberland Co for $10,000.
On April 26, 1813 Joshua Jr. bought land adjacent to Joshua Sr. in Southhampton Twp. This was not far from his brother Joseph's 1805 land purchase. Joshua Jr remained in Cumberland Co. until he died in 1864.
Rev. Joshua Sr. was an elder in the new Evangelical Association and was addressed as "Father" and was highly esteemed by all who knoew him. Heinecke (1869) mentions him frequently in tyhis book, having attended his second wedding and noting regrets of his death at age 87. Joshuar's first wife Anna Sharrrick died in 1828. He married widowed Susanna Hershberger Vandersall.
The last remaining piece of his father Johannes' property left in the family name was when Caspar Knegy, son of Joshua, sold a piece of the Monroe Valley property in 1820.
Before 1835 Joshua Sr. left for East Greenfield, Stark Co., Ohio with his son Samuel with whom he had been living. His sons Caspar and John V nearby in Ohio also came. Joshua lived there until just before his death. Joshua was buried in a small cemetery near the Methodist church in East Greenfield. He donated the land for the cemetery for himself and his relatives in his will of 1836. His will, written in 1836, found in Canton, Ohio names all of his 12 children who were alive, including the married names of his daughters. (Will Book B, p. 318 on microfilm)[1]

Notes

Buried at East Greenville, Ohio, but probably died in Bluffton, IN, where Samuel established a successful business. Wife #2, Susanna, is buried in Bluffton, (Adams Co), IN.
At the time of his death, there was one "Greenville" in Ohio, but in the 20th century, there are two. Joshua is buried in what is now called, "East Greenville" despite contemporary records of his burial in Greenville.
On 5 May 1832, Joshua bought 16.5 Acres in Tuscarawas Twp, Stark County, Ohio for $400[6]
On 29 Jun 1832, Joshua bought 10 Acres in Tuscarawas Twp, Stark County, Ohio for $230[8]
On 17 Aug 1832, Joshua bought 26.5 Acres in Tuscarawas Twp, Stark County, Ohio for $830[9]
On 4 Aug 1834, Joshua bought 7 Acres in Tuscarawas Twp, Stark County, Ohio for $150[10]
In 1820, both Joshua Kindagy Sr and Jr were enumerated in Southampton, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania.[11]
Both still enumerated on same page in same place in 1830. [12]
In 1832 he made three land purchases in Tuscarawas Township, Stark County, Ohio (sections 8, 9, and 11). He moved there in 1835.[13] Together, those in section 8 covered 52 acres (his farm?). He also bought land in section 11 of that township. Also in 1832 he married Susannah, the widow of John Vandersaul. Interestingly, John and Susannah's daughter (Mary) had married Joshua's son (Samuel).
In 1843 Joshua died, leaving $50 to son, Casper, but dividing the remaining assets among the other sons and daughters in equal amounts. Since the estate and property sales brought in over $4000,[14] Casper's portion was significantly smaller. Yet Casper, John and Samuel (all Joshua's sons) were named as executors for his will.
"(And it came to pass that Joshua Kenegy, Sr. and his son Samuel, with family, removed to Stark County, Ohio. As I passed through Greenville, Stark County, and incident occurred. I stopped at Father and Aunt Susy's, as she was called; just then up rode a stranger, and inquired for Mr. Kenegy. Said the stranger, "My name is Mitchell; I am the son of the Rev. Mr. Mitchell. Mr. Kenegy, do you remember, when you were a young man, that at a certain Camp Meeting wicked persons came to molest the meeting, and were about taking my father from the stand and abusing him, that you knocked the ringleader of them down, and that they then all went off?" "Yes, " said father Kenegy, "I remember it well; I was not then religious." "Well," said Mr. Mitchell, "I have always esteemed you for that act. If I now can do you a favor, I will do so."[15]

Kenagy-104 and Kenegy-4 appear to represent the same person because: I've been tracking Jost (Joshua) Kenegy for some time (direct ancestor). There are many errors in family trees on the internet, but I've tracked him from birth in PA, middle years in Ohio, later years in Indiana, and even his burial site (back in OH). If you would allow me access, I can merge Jost, his brothers, mother and step-mother. If you approve, I'd appreciate being added to the trusted list for his ancestors and descendants. There appear to be many duplicates, largely because the name was spelled many ways. In Switzerland it was (and is) Gnagi (umlauts over the a). The name became Kenegy on some legal documents as early as Jost's father. In my line, it became Kenagy with his son (Samuel). It remains Gnagey with descendants of this brother Christian, Kanagy with descendants of John, Keneagy with descendants of Ulrich, Kanaga from his brother Joseph, and many more. (I even have a DNA match to a family in the south who spell it Kornegay)
