Alfred Eli Kennard was born on 26 April 1865^{[1][2][3][4][5][6]} in Springville, Linn County, Iowa, United States^{[2][3][4][5][6]} or Ohio, United States^[1]. He was the son of Eli Kennard^[1][2] and Mary Edgerton^[1][2].

Alfred married Anna "Annie" Dale Bulger^{[7][8][3][9][4][5][6]} on 31 October 1889^[7][8][9] in Belmont County, Ohio, United States^[7][8].

Anna and Alfred had 7 children: Alfred "Freddie" Eli Kennard, Jr.^[9][3][4], Ruth Anna (Kennard) Pickett^[9][3][4], William "Willie" Kennard^[9][3][4][5], Paul J Kennard^[9][10], S Francis Kennard^{[9][11][4][5][12]}, Charles Kennard^[9][13], and Mary Elizabeth (Kennard) Gamble^{[9][4][5][14]}.
