Gordon was born about 1825/1828 in Pike Township, Knox County, Ohio. He was the son of Robert Kennedy and Hannah Unknown.
By 1830, his father had died and his mother was left with ten children in her household.[1]
On March 12, 1836, Gordon, his brothers John and Stilley, and his sister Nancy Jane, were placed under the guardianship of John Gordon of Pike Township, Knox County, Ohio, to manage their personal estates. On June 6, 1836, John Gordon, along with David Jackson, took out a bond to settle his wards' personal estates.[2] By 1840, Gordon and his sister Nancy Jane were living with their older brother James and sister-in-law Elizabeth in Monroe Township, Knox County, Ohio.[3]
