Biography

James J Kennedy was born in 1834/35, in Ireland, to William Kennedy and Elizabeth Kearney. [1] [2] [3]

On 22 June 1846, William and Elizabeth left Liverpool, on the packet ship Patrick Henry, with their children James, Robert, John, Ann and Thomas. They arrived in New York City, New York, on 31 July 1846. [2] [4]

In 1850, they were living in ward 6, Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. [1]

On 3 March 1864, he married Christianna Hobson, at the Sandusky Street Baptist Church, Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [5] They apparently had these children:

Mary Kennedy (ca 1865-1901)
Annie Kennedy (ca 1867-1943)
Katie Kennedy (ca 1868-1959)

He served as a second class fireman on the USS Great Western during the US Civil War. He enlisted on 30 August 1864, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and was discharged on 13 June 1865. [6] [5]

In 1870, they were living in ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a shoemaker. The 1870 census does not report him as a citizen able to vote. [7]

When he died, he was a fireman. [3]

On 14 September 1870, he was admitted to Episcopal Hospital, with 'scalds received on board the steamboat Jefferson, of the Clyde line, plying the route between this port and Delaware City'. [8]

He died on 26 September 1870, at 1306 Adrian Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was scalds, which he received on the steamboat Jefferson, of the Clyde line. He was initially interred in the Hanover Street Vault, on 29 September 1870. He was later buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, section Q, lot 102, with Elizabeth Kennedy and others. The undertaker was James R Irons. [3] [9] [10] [11] [8]

His body was reinterred at Mount Peace Cemetery on 22 December 1884, when his mother-in-law's brother John Hobson was buried there. [10] [12]
