Biography

John Kennedy (1782-1843) was the son of James Raworth Kennedy and Elizabeth / Lydia (Pearce) Kennedy.

John Kennedy was born on 2 February 1782, and was baptised on 26 February 1782 at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Surrey, England, his parents recorded as James (draftsman) and Elizabeth Kennedy of "Bermondsey New Rd".[1]

John Kennedy, when 12 years old, travelled to New South Wales on the Surprize in 1794 with his [Uncle?] Matthew Pearce and family. (See death notice below)

John Kennedy married Caroline Best on 30 August 1813 at St Mathew's, Church of England, Windsor, New South Wales, Australia. It was noted in the register that they were both of the District of Appin.[2][3]

DEATHS.
At Keswicke, Gunning, on the 19th instant, John Kennedy, Esq., after a lingering illness.

The Colonial Observer 1 April 1843: [6]

DIED.
On the 19th ultimo, after a protracted and painful illness, which he bore with the utmost fortitude, John Kennedy, Esq.. of Keswycke, county of King, aged 61 years. His widow and eleven children are left to deplore the loss of a valued husband and father. His retired habits and domestic virtues had gained for him the love and esteem of a large circle of relations and friends.
Mr. Kennedy accompanied his father and sisters to this country in the year 1794, and has since struggled through colonial changes with industry and perseverance.

DEATHS.
On Sunday, the 19th of March instant, about eight o'clock in the evening, Mr. John Kennedy, of Gunning, in Argyle, leaving a widow and large family to deplore his loss.
Mr. Kennedy arrived with part of his family, by the Surprise, in 1795, and was one of the first who emigrated to New South Wales, then in its infancy.
Mr. Kennedy was the first European who entered the now county of Argyle by the Bargo Brush, in the early part of the present century (if not before.)
