Born in Ireland, the son of Roseanna Gibney and Hugh Kennedy.
In 1868, in Victoria, Australia, Michael Kennedy married Bridget Tobin.[1]
Sergeant Michael Kennedy was killed 26 October 1878, while confronting Ned Kelly in the Wombat Ranges. His death registration gives his birthplace as Westmeath, Ireland, names his wife as Bridget Tobin, and his parents as Hugh Kennedy and Roseanna Gibney. [2]

- Application was made in the Supreme Court on Monday 28 to Mr. Justice Hodges for a grant of letters of administration to the estate of Sergeant Michael Kennedy, who was murdered by the Kelly gang on the 26th October, 1878. The application was made by Mr. Anderson, on behalf of Mrs. Bridget Mary Kennedy, the widow of the deceased. His property was stated to be worth £900 realty and £122 personalty. The affidavits, however, were informal, in not stating that these sums were the present values of the properties. His Honour refused the application, but stated that it could be renewed when further affidavits were filed. [3]
