Biography

Michael Kennedy was born Carlton, Victoria, on 10th July 1892, and registered as the son of Lucy Kennedy.

On 10th September, recorded as Austin Kennedy, he was committed to a Melbourne institution, charged with vagrancy, as was the custom in those days for needy children, and expected to stay a Ward of the State until his eighth birthday. According to his admission records, his mother was Lucy Kennedy, servant, and his father, Michael Nowlan, labourer, who had deserted. The file also appears to say Lucy might be subject to fits.

Austin appears to have been immediately boarded, or fostered, out to a Mrs Ward.

On 2nd March 1893, he died from Marasmus. As Austin Kennedy, and aged 6 months, his death was registered Melbourne West, the names of his parents not recorded.
