Biography

John was born about 1760. Some genealogies have him born in Dull, Perthshire.

Mentioned in baptism of son, Paul, in 1807, Kingussie and Insh ^[1]

Also mentioned in daughter Elizabeth Kennedy McBain's immigration to Australia ^[2]

Research Notes

Military records show a John Kennedy enlisted in the following:

• Royal Clan MacAlpin Fencibles: From 1799 to 20 Dec 1802, description 40 years, dark complexion, brown hair, gray eyes born in Kingussie; transferred out on dissolution of regiment.
• 79th Regiment of Foot 1804 to 16 Nov 1807 when transferred out on dissolution of regiment, aged 51, dark complexion, black hair, gray eyes born Kingussie
• 9th Veterans and Gordon Fencibles, concurrent 1807 - 1812/1813; 9th Veterans say aged 55, brown hair, gray eyes, brown complexion; Gordons say: aged 34 years, dark complexion, black hair, blue eyes born Insh. This is all the same man as his records are itemized on his pension^[3]

As the above records show that a John Kennedy was born in Kingussie and Insh around 1760, there is doubt about the birth in Dull.

A john Kennedy was also recorded in the will of a Donald Kennedy, sometime tenant of Kerrowmianach 1776, "John Kennedy in Rails (Ralia), eldest lawful son of the said defunct..." Ralia is not far from Kerrowmianach, and Kerrowmianach is associated with this branch of the Kennedys.^[4]

There is no proof this is the correct John Kennedy. What it does show is that there was john Kennedy born and residing in Kingussie during the time frame and not in Dull.
