Biography

Ann Smith was born in about 1833 in Blaby, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom and baptised there on 31 March 1833. She was daughter of William and Sarah. [1]

John Wells (a batchelor age 23, a cabinet maker) of Luke Street, Leicester, the son of William Wells (publican) married Ann Smith (a spinster age 20), the daughter of William Smith (pensioner) on 29 Dec 1853 at St Margaret's Church, Leicester after banns. Witnesses were Selina Wells and Henry Smith. Henry Matthews BA, Curate, performed the marriage. [2][3]

The birth of a daughter, Sarah Ann Wells was registered in 1854 J Quarter in Leicester. [4]

The birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Peace Wells was registered in 1856 J Quarter in Leicester. [5]

The birth of a daughter, Florence Wells was registered in 1859 J Quarter in Leicester. [6]

In 1861, John Wells (30, cabinet maker, born in Leicester) and Ann Wells (28, born in Blaby) were living in Luke Street, Leicester, along with their children, Sarah Ann Wells (6, scholar), Elizabeth P Wells (4, scholar) and Florance Wells (2, scholar), [7]

In 1891, John Wells (head, married, male, age 60, a cabinet maker & grocer born in Leicester) and his wife, Ann Wells (58, born in Blaby, Leicestershire) were living at 1 Watling Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, along with their children, Elizabeth P Wells (33, single, shoe machinist), Florence Wells (30, single, Shoe flowerer), Ada Wells (21, single, Embroidery hand boots), Lillie Wells (20, shoe flowerer), George A Wells (18, shoe clicker), Walter K Wells (17, clerk) and Ernest E Wells (13, Office clerk). All of the children were born in Leicester. [19]

On the 1901 census John Wells (70, grocer shopkeeper, born in Leicester), his wife, Ann Wells (age 68, born in Blaby, Leicestershire) and five of their adult, unmarried children - Elizabeth (44, boot machinist), Florence (41, boot flowerer), Lillie (30, boot embroiderer), Walter K (27, tailor's clerk) and Ernest E (23, iron founder's pattern maker), all born in Leicester - were living at 1 Watling Street, Leicester, Leicestershire. In 1911, John Wells (80, grocer shopkeeper, born in Leicester), his wife, Ann Wells (age 78, born in Blaby, Leicestershire) and three of their adult, unmarried children - Florrie Wells (51, assisting in the business, born in Leicester), Lillie Wells (40, boot machinist, born in Leicester) and Ernest E Wells (32,pattern maker, shoe machinery, born in Leicester) were living at 1 Watling Street, Leicester, Leicestershire. Ann Wells died in 1916 March quarter in Leicester. [22]

Her husband, John Wells died in 1919 March quarter in Leicester. [23]
