William was born on 20 January 1790 in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Martin Kennedy and Rebecca Sill.[1][2]
By 1800, William's father had moved the family to Middlesex Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.[3]
William married Sarah Russell about 1810 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1] They were the parents of eight known children, three sons and five daughters. Their first two sons were born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Their children were:
By 1815, William had moved his family to Clermont County, Ohio, along with his grandparents George and Isabella Sill and his brother-in-law Hugh Russell. Three of his children were born there before he moved his family to Harrison Township, Fayette County, Indiana. William Kennedy was isted in the 1820 census for Harrison Township, Fayette County, Indiana, enumerating 3 males age 0-10 (son Joseph, 10; son Martin, 7; son John 3), 1 male age 27-45 (William, 30), 2 females age 0-10 (daughter Jane, 5; daughter Rebecca, 1), 1 female age 27-45 (wife Sarah, 33).[4]
By 1823, William had moved his family to Parke County, Indiana, where his last three children were born. On 12 February 1823, he purchased 164 acres, which was patented on 10 March 1824.[5] In 1830, William Kennedy was listed in the census for Parke County, Indiana enumerating 1 male age 10-15 (son John, 13), 1 male age 15-20 (son Martin, 17), 1 male age 20-30 (son Joseph, 20), 1 male age 40-50 (William, 40), 2 females age 0-5 (daughter Clarissa, 4; daughter Elvira, 1), 1 female age 5-10 (daughter Marinda, 6), 1 female age 10-15 (daughter Rebecca, 11), 1 female age 15-20 (daughter Jane, 15), 1 female age 40-50 (wife Sarah, 43).[6]
By 1840, William had moved his family to neighboring Posey Township, Clay County, Indiana. William Kennedy was listed in the census enumerating 1 male age 0-5 (grandson Russell Bowsher, 0), 1 male age 15-20 (grandson?), 1 male age 20-30 (son John, 23), 1 male age 50-60 (William, 50), 2 females age 10-15 (daughter Clarissa, 14; daughter Elvira, 11), 1 female age 15-20 (daughter Marinda, 16), 1 female age 20-30 (daughter Jane, 25), 1 female age 50-60 (wife Sarah, 53). Son Joseph married and remained in Parke County, Indiana. Daughter Rebecca died in 1840.[7]
In 1850, William Kennedy was listed as a farmer in the census for Posey Township, Clay, County, Indiana, along with wife Sarah, daughter Jane (33), daughter Elvira (20), and grandson Russell W Bowsher (10).[8]
On 26 September 1858, William wrote a history of the Kennedy and Russell families that he completed on 23 November 1858. He named his great-great grandfather William Kennedy, great-grandparents William Kennedy and Jane Gray, grandparents Hugh Kennedy and Catherine Hughes, and grandfather Hugh Kennedy's siblings James Kennedy, William Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and wife Polly Thompson, Isabella Kennedy and husband George Sill, and Rebecca Kennedy and husband James Ryan. He also named his parents Martin Kennedy and Rebecca Sill's siblings and his parents children.[1]
In 1860, William Kennedy was listed as a farmer in the census for Posey Township, Clay County, Indiana, along with wife Sarah and daughter Jane.[9]
William's wife Sarah died on 26 April 1863 in Clay City, Harrison Township, Clay County, Indiana.
William died on 13 January 1867 in Clay City, Harrison Township, Clay County, Indiana.
