Edward Ralph was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1895, the son of Edward and Esther (Martin) Kenneson.  He grew up in Somerville.
He married Mary Aileen Cubberly about 1917.
He attended the School of Aeronautics at Newport News, Virginia, in 1916, and earned his flying license there in December of that year.
He enlisted in the E.R.C. [Enlisted Reserve Corps] of the U.S. Army on December 18, 1916. He was called into active service on May 9, 1917, as 1st Lieutenant of the A.S., Signal Corps. He was deployed overseas in August of 1917, with the 9th Aero Squadron.
He died of pneumonia at a Paris hospital on January 9, 1919; his remains were returned to his family for burial in 1919. He was buried with full military honors at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
