Biography

A Mining Engineer and Government Commissioner of Mines for Demerara.

William's birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1837 in the Wrexham district.[1]

In the 1851 census William (age 13) was the son of William Kendrick in Bodlulltin, Denbighshire, Wales.[2]

In the 1861 census William (age 23) was the son of William Kenrick in Denbighshire, Wales.[3]

William (full age), son of William Kenrick, married Mary Anne James on 20 June 1861 in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales.[4]

In the 1881 census William (age 43), Mining Engineer, was the married head of household in The Oaklands, Rugeley, Staffordshire, England.[5]

William was a freemason. He was initiated into the Staffordshire Knot Lodge on 21st February 1883.[6]

In December 1890, he accepted the post of Gold Commissioner (post later known The Commissionership of Mines) to the colony of British Guiana from Lord Knutsford and arrived at his new posting in January 1891. He had extensive experience working in both South Africa, California and Natal and he was closely concerned with the framing of the new mining regulations in the colony.

William was very uncomfortable with the climate in Guiana[7] and had recently recovered from a fever when he set out to inspect the north west area of his territory at the beginning of September 1892. He set off with as staff of 22 aboard the steamer Essequebo. He fell ill at Amacura Falls and the party returned to Morawhanna where William died on 14th September.

He was buried in the churchyard at Morawhanna with a service attended by all the officers of the district, and the native gold diggers. The service was read by Acting Government Agent, Captain Cartwright as there was no clergyman present.[8]
