Mary Humphreys is believed to be the daughter of Hugh Kensey. The evidence for this relationship is given as follows:
On 22 May 1660, Hugh Kinsey entered his right to claim 400 acres that he surveyed along the Patapsco River in 1659. He transported the following persons to Maryland: Hugh Kinsey, Richard Meredith, Abraham South, Mary Humphreys, Elizabeth Kinsey, Mary Humphreys, Jr , Paul Kinsey, and Edward Norson. [1] Mary appears to be a widow with a daughter in this land claim, but all of the people listed do not have to be related to Hugh Kensey.
Mary was mentioned in the 1667 will of Hugh Kensey as follows:
Mary Humphreys was deceased before 28 JUL 1670 when a warrant was given to W. Ball to resurvey the several acres belonging to the orphan of Humphreys or his own father Ball. Just below this statement was the warrant to resurvey for Mary Humphrys orphant of Thomas Humphryes of the county of Baltimore decd. a parcel of land called East Humphreys cont. 300 acres. At the same time William Ball was given a warrant to resurvey a 420 acre parcel called Ballistone. [3]
A patented date 23 FEB 1677 to Hannah Ball , daughter of Richard Ball , late of Baltimore County, deceased for 300 acres in Baltimore County, called East Humphreys. The tract was patented 13 FB 1659 to Thomas Humphreys who died leaving one daughter, Mary Humphreys, and devised the land by will to his wife Mary Humphreys. Mary Humphreys, widow of Thomas Humphreys, conveyed the land to her daughter and shortly after wed Richard Ball by whom she had one daughter, Hannah Ball.
Mary Humphreys, daughter of Thomas and Mary obtained a re-survey on said land and a patent on the re-survey dated 10 June 1671 , but subsequently died without issue . Richard Ball and Mary, his wife, are both dead, and William Ball administrator of Richard Ball , petitions for an extension of the patent to Hannah Ball , sole daughter of Richard and Mary, as heir to her sister, Mary Humphreys. Whereupon the patent was issued as prayed. [4]
Mary was married first to Thomas Humphreys of Rappahannock, Virginia and they were the parents of one known daughter.
Mary Humphreys was married to her second husband, Richard Ball before 1 MAR 1661/62 and was living on the tract called East Humphreys. [5]Mary and Richard were the parents of one daughter:
Original sources indicating she was daughter of Hugh Kinsey and widow of Thomas Humphrey are discussed in The William Ball Family of Virginia. by Claudette M. Atwood Maerz, The William Ball Family of Virginia, Bloomington, MN: author (1993), digital copy available on familysearch.org, pp. 6-8
