Biography

[1]

William Kent b c1783 , died after 1870 Morgan Co AL census. His children and their descendants are well documented by census and marriage records. He may be the brother of Elbert Kent-8220 and Randolph Kent-8221

1,Three of his descendants have matching Y DNA, but do not match any Kent, but they match dozens of Carlisles of various spellings. 2, William Kent and wife Sally both age 67, b NC per1850 Morgan Co AL Census NC. Daughters, Avarilla Kent Stephenson, Delana Kent Vest and Eliza Kent Deskins stated both parents b GA and son William (Buck) Kent stated father b NC and mother b GA. in 1880 census. He and his wife had Carlisle Y DNA!!!

Y DNA details: Two via his son William "Buck" Kent (b 1821 d before 1900) Kits 73106 and 342694 and one via his son Wiley Kent ( b about 1807 d before 1850) Kit542491. However a NPE occurred as these three only matched many NC Carlisles of various spellings and no Kents anywhere.

The first time he was documented was in Madison Co. AL was on 1810 tax records Also an Elbert Kent is in Madison Co.AL before 1812 when he married Polly Clark Later census records show Elbert b 1790 GA. These two were obviously related, as many of William’s descendants named a son Elbert and William and Elbert were neighbors in Morgan Co 1830 and 1840 census. Between 1840 and 1850 Elbert located in MS. MUSTER ROLLS MEN NORTH ALABAMA TAKEN FROM OLD HUNTSVILLE MAGAZINE War of 1812 Soldiers from North Alabama: 16th REGIMENT (BURRUS') OF MISSISSIPPI MILITIA Kent, William, ensign Kent, Elbert, private

If Elbert b 1790 GA, was a William’s brother, then William m Sally in GA but if they were cousins or unrelated William and Sally could have been m in NC and came directly to Madison Co. AL Some believe that he married a Sally Kent in GA in 1806 and others have posted that he married Sarah Palmer.

Census records show that William and Sally Kent’s children were all b AL, all dates approximate: Wiley b 1800-1810, Avarilla b 1811, John b 1814, Polly Ann b 1817, Eliza b 1818, William ‘Buck” b 1821, and Delana b 1824. It is impossible to do a biography on William or Elbert Kent without introducing the families of William Clark and Thomas Clarke, who were not related since William Clark and wife were born in Virginia and Thomas Clark and his first wife were born in South Carolina. The source for this information was the 1880 census records of their children. William Clark and his unknown wife were listed in an 1809 Madison Co. AL census with 5 males under 21, 6 females under 21. Thomas Clarke and unknown wife were in York Co. SC in 1820 census with 2 sons and 1 daughter and Lawrence Co. AL in 1830 census with 2 sons and 2 daughters. The intermarriage is as follows William Clark (d 1830) had daughter Polly Clark b c1705 TN who married Elbert Kent 1 FEB 1812 Madison Co. AL and a son Francis Clark b 1797 TN who married Betsy Burton 14 AUG 1816 Morgan Co. AL. Among Francis’ and Betsy’s children was a daughter Polly b1818 AL who married Wiley Kent son of William Kent. Another daughter of Francis and Betsy Clark was Susan who married William “Buck” Kent, brother of Wiley 15 FEB 1841. Polly Ann Kent b 1817 AL who was a sister of Wiley and Buck, m 10 DEC 1835 James Clarke b 1814 SC. James was the son of Thomas Clarke b 1780 SC whose daughter Louisa Clarke b 1823-5 AL m 24 OCT 1838 Cornelius Green and their daughter Louisa Green b 1856 m 7 APR 1874 David H. Kent b 1844 AL who was the son of Wiley and Polly Clark Kent Sometime before 1830 the two Kents and William Clark families moved from Madison Co. to the very most south west TSP of Morgan Co AL as shown in BLM land records. The 1840 census has them and their neighbors in adjacent Walker Co. and in 1850 they are all back in Morgan Co so the census taker strayed or the county line was changed and then changed back. The 1840 census shows how close these families were related in the following order: Francis Clark and second wife, Wiley Kent and wife Polly Clark, Cornelius Green and wife Louisa Clark (e), James Clarke and wife Polly Ann Kent William Kent b 1783 NC and wife Sally. Everyone in that census became my ancestor (except second wife of Francis) when David Kent, b 1844, son of Wiley and Polly Clark Kent, married Louisa Green b 1856, dau of Cornelius Green and Louisa Clarke. Their son Elbert Jackson Kent was my grandfather.

William and Sally Kent were not found in the 1860 census but in the 1870 Morgan Co. AL census William is now 88 and b NC with a new Sally 63 years old b TN. She could have been his second wife or a widowed daughter in law. This is his last recorded event.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Update:

This William Kent was NOT the son of Richard Kent and Sarah Doane of Maine as posted elsewhere. All their other children were born in Maine and their William Kent b 1784 married Sally Wing and all their children were born in Maine.

I recently discovered, via autosomal DNA , that I am a cousin of a gg gd of Aravilla Kent, daughter of Randolph Kent and Elizabeth who married Jones Starke 1834 at Clarke Co. GA. This was no surprise because of the following; William Kent b 1883 NC, his daughter Avarilla and his son Wiley named a daughter Aravilla. This suggests that very likely, an unknown Kent and his wife Avarilla had sons Randolph b abt. 1775 NC, William b 1783 NC and Elbert b 1790 GA.

Y DNA testing of Kent descendants of Randolph and Elbert can confirm that they all had Carlisle Y DNA or that only William's descendants have Carlisle Y DNA. If this is true, usually the NPE is as follows, Randolph's Kent's father had a sister who was impregnated by a man named Carlisle and Randolph's parents informally adopted their daughter's son William. Or Randolph's father married a Carlisle female and when her parents died her younger brother William was taken in and later became a Kent. Both events have been found during my 52 years of research.
