Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Joshua Kenyon Esq. served with Rhode Island Line during the American Revolution.

Joshua was born about 1739 to parents Enoch Kenyon Jr. (abt.1715-1775) and Lucy (Saunders) Kenyon (1719-aft.1800). In 1774 he married Mary (Cross) Kinyon (abt.1744-1810). Joshua died in 1803.

While there is one source that shows Joshua was a Sergeant in the Continental Army from Rhode Island, his Find A Grave memorial shows his rank as Captain. Since he was identified as an attorney/lawyer, this could mean his rank was from his service in the Continental Army (or Militia) during the Revolutionary War (and they was not a sea captain). Although not entirely proven, Capt. Kenyon may have had a remote affiliation to the famed Culper Spy Ring during the Revolutionary War [1].

BURIAL: Chapman Burial Ground, Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA [2]

Research Notes

  • Journal of Samuel Tallmadge PAGE 775, Orderly books of the Fourth New York Regiment, 1778-1780, the Second New York Regiment, 1780-1783, Via Ancestry.com SHOWS on 23 Apr 1782 that Samuel Tallmadge spent the day with Col. Deys, but states that same day that Tallmadge "Visited the Great falls after which Returned to Col. Deys & Dined, Tarried with Capt. Kenyon this night at Prakenis." Parkenis is not found as a location searching the internet ("might" be "Preakness", New Jersey (NOT Maryland)), but other towns mentioned near this date (Totoway, Hutts Pequanneck) appear to be location in or near Passaic County in New Jersey, Totoway was an encampment location for the Continental Army and George Washington at this time. "Hutts Pequanneck" can be interpreted as "Hudson Pequanneck" as "Hutts" was known shorthand at the time for Hudson.
    • SIGNIFICANCE: It is unknown if this is the "same" Capt. Kenyon as that of this record's Joshua Kenyon; what is known is that Samuel Tallmadge (1755-1825) was the brother of famed Revolutionary War Culpeper Spy Ring Leader Benjamin Tallmadge (1754-1835). Thus, this record's Capt. Joshua Kenyon may have had an affiliation with the Culper Spy Ring.

Per land deeds, Joshua Kenyon the son of Enoch and brother of Roger Kenyon and Sarah Kenyon Potter, was married to an Elizabeth in 1783.

There are two Joshua Kenyon's on the 1790 Census in Charlestown.

One Joshua Kenyon has 2 males with 7 females and lives next to Ephraim Burdick & Isaac Saunders in Charlestown.

One Joshua Kenyon has 4 males and 2 females and lives next to Sarah Potter widow and George Hall in Charlestown.

Also on 10 Sep 1779, in the Charlestown Town Council Records, there is a posting that shows Joshua Kenyon son of Enoch and Capt. Joshua Kenyon in the same paragraph being assigned to grand and pettit juries, so it seems like there were two Joshua's close to the same age give or take and one is called of Enoch and the other is Capt. Joshua.

It seems like this profile is not Joshua, son of Enoch but the son of Capt Joshua Kenyon as this profile shows only one son and has a spouse Mary Cross.
