Research Notes

St.Francis’ church was commissioned by the first catholoc priest in the Port Phillip district, Patrick Bonaventure geoghegan ISSF, and designed by Samuel Jackson. The foundatiion stone was laid on the feast of St.Francis of Assisi, October 4, 1841. From 1848 until the transfer to St.Patrick’s catherdral in 1868, St.Francis’ was the episcopal seat of Bishop James Alipius Goold OSA. Since 1929 it has been a centre of Eurharistic life in the care of the congregation of the blessed sacrementt. Steeped in prayer since colonial days, this church remains a haven of prayer open to all. St Francis' Church is the oldest Catholic church in Victoria, Australia. Located on the corner of Lonsdale Street and Elizabeth Street, it is one of only three buildings in central Melbourne which predates the Gold Rush of 1851.
