James was born about 1845. He is the son of William Kern and Elizabeth Mickeal.

In his obituary it states " In the death of James Kern or "Daddy" Kern as he was familiarly called, another citizen who has played well his part in life, has departed from our midst and one who will not only be sadly missed by near relatives but also by more than the usual number of friends and acquaintances to which the average man is linked during his life time for to know Mr. Kern was to like him and to admire his jovial nature and his kindly helpful disposition which made his visits always a pleasure and his acquaintanceship prized."
