Biography

Szentkirályi Lajos was born on 20 Jul. 1892 in Kula, Bács-Bodrog county, Hungary, but grew up in Szeged, Csongrád county. He graduated from the Piarist high school there (despite being Lutheran) in 1910, with the declared intention of studying business.

In World War I, Lajos was a one-year volunteer ("EinjFreiw.": Einjährig Freiwilliger). His rank is listed as "TitUnterjäg", which may be some sort of rifleman and/or corporal. The Loss List of 1 Apr 1916 reported that he was taken prisoner in Dauria, Sabajkalsk district, Russia. The family story is that he escaped from the POW camp and made his way home on foot.

Lajos married Nyíri Edit on 23 Nov. 1924, in Budapest, district I.

Lajos's brother Dezső Hungarianized "Kern" to "Szentkirályi" in 1921; Lajos followed suit in 1941, per the Official Bulletin of the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry, and Business.

He must've carried through on studying business, because his occupation is listed as "bank official" on his marriage record in 1924, and as "company manager" on the name-change notification in 1941.

In 1958, Lajos and his wife joined their daughter Éva in Massachusetts.

Lajos died on 16 Jan. 1968 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He is buried in Woods Hole.
