Biography
3rd son of Adam Sr
Adam was born in 1794. Two sons and a daughter lived for a very short time. He commenced his career as an apprentice blacksmith. He is shown in the 1820 and 1830 census in Nicholas, KY living on a farm adjoining his father, Adam Sr.. After his marriage to Jane Hall moved two miles away on land that had been settled by Jane's family. In the spring of 1833, he bought 640 acres in Boone, IN. He had someone else clear the land when he went back to KY. Calling Boone County that "that lonely wilderness country". On Oct 8, 1833, they moved first into a "double log cabbin" called also a round log house on Wolf Creek in Jefferson Township. Later into a huge log house. "Coming from a slave state, Adam brought with him one negro man called Levi whom he freed and settled on 80 acres known as the "Old Leeve Field". He also freed another named Vine who stayed in Kentucky. Deeply religious, he founded two churches, the Pleasant View Church in Boone, IN and New Light Church, giving the land and buildings for both. Adam owned about 1000 acres in 1858 but the crash and two sons involvement in the milling business threatened backruptcy, He sold 933 acres for $19,500 on Jan 27, 1858 and moved to Clinton and founded another churcharch 21, 1861. Antioch New Light Christian Church (later Congregational Christian and then in 1967 the United Church of Christ), again donating land and building. Adam Jr was described as being somewhat old fashioned and brusque in his talk and manner, but also being "as tender-hearted as a child...very liberal...his heart always open to the cry of the helpless or unfortunate." At the time of his death he had 74 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. (2)
