In 1881 Janette Kerr, aged 20 and born in Chippenham, was recorded as one of three draper's assistants in the Abbotsbury, Dorset household of John Poynter, master draper and grocer, and his sister Elizabeth.[3]
Janet's father died in January 1891 and by April of that year she was living with her mother in Croydon, now part of Greater London, and still employed as a draper's assistant.[4]
By 1901, mother and daughter resided in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire where both were "living on own means."[5]
