Lt-Gen. William Kerr was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.
William Kerr is a member of Clan Kerr.

William Kerr was born about 1661 in Newbottle, Durham, England, son of Robert Kerr (1636 - 1703) and Lady Jean Campbell ( - 1700).

His siblings were:

  1. Charles Kerr ( - 1735)
  2. Mary Marchioness (Kerr) Douglas (<1674 - 1736)

William married his first cousin Lady Jane Campbell (~1657 - 1712), daughter of Sir Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll on 30 June 1685[1].

Their children were:

  1. Mary Kerr ( - 1768)
  2. Anne (Kerr) Ogle (>1685 - 1727)
  3. William Kerr KT (~1690 - 1767)
  4. Lady Jean (Kerr) Cranstoun (~1695 - ~1768)
  5. Lady Elizabeth (Kerr) Ross (~1702 - 1758).

On the death of his kinsman Robert Kerr, third Lord Jedburgh, he succeeded to that title and sat in Parliament as Lord Jedburgh[1][2].

He was a Colonel of the 7th Regiment of Dragoons as at 1 October 1696 and was considered to be a stout adherent of the revolution[1][2].

Following his fathers death in 1703 he became Marquis of Lothian and was created a Knight of the Thistle in 1705[1][2].

He obtained the command of the 3rd Foot Guards on 25 April 1707 and the rank of Lieutenant General in 1708. He was deprived of his regiment on a change of administration in 1713 however subsequently became Major General on the North British Staff[1][2].

William died on 28 February 1722 in London aged 60 and was interred in King Henry VII's Chapel in Westminster Abbey on 6 March 1722[1].
