John was born in Saltmarshe, Yorkshire, England in 1805 and was baptised nearby in Howden. He was the son of John and Hannah Kershaw.[1]
John married Alice Maud in 1824 in Bubwith, Yorkshire.[2] The family lived at Burland in the parish of Eastrington, Yorkshire, in 1841. John was an agricultural labourer.[3] By 1851 the Kershaws lived in Howden and John was a farm bailiff.[4]
