Biography

The Kershaw-Cantey lineage has been documented in a family genealogy of the Cantey family.[1] Mary Cantey married Ely Kershaw on 19 Nov 1769. In 1766 Ely was granted the land on which the town of Cheraw is now located.

Ely Kershaw's will, dated 1 Aug 1780 and proved 24 Mar 1783, names his three children as John, Ely and Rebecca Kershaw. [2] The will provides that all of his estate after debt payment "be equally divided between my three children, namely, My Son John Kershaw, my Son Ely Kershaw, and my Daughter Rebecca Kershaw and that they be educated and brought up and put in possession their several Shares . . . " So, there were only three children, and they were all minors in 1780.
