Biography

Georg Bernhard Kessler was probably born in Mühlhofen or nearby Winden in about November, 1711 (sources differ regarding the location). (For information about Mühlhofen, see Wikipedia at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BChlhofen_(Billigheim-Ingenheim).) He was baptized in Barbelroth on November 8, 1711. He was the son of Nickel Kessler (Kessler-207) and his second wife Maria Magdalena (Acontius-1).[1]

On July 30, 1736 he married Anna Catharina (Hauswirth) Kessler (1714-aft.1768) in Winden. [2]

They had five children there, all baptized in the Evangelical Church of Winden:

  • Bernhard, born September 26, 1739 (no further record found, but he likely survived to emigrate, based on his mother applying to emigrate with four children);
  • Johannes, born January 12, 1742 (records found in Maryland);
  • Isaac, born May 8, 1744 and died April 23, 1747;
  • Susanna Catharina, born November 7, 1749 (no further records found, but she likely survived to emigrate).

In 1751, his wife Anna Catharina, applied to emigrate with her husband and four children. According to Kessler Family History:

At the territorial archives in Speyer, Germany, located about 20 miles northwest of Winden a handwritten document authorizing the 1751 immigration of our direct family line to America was located. It reads:

“Catharina Kessler, maiden name Hauswirth, of Winden, is traveling with her husband and four children to America.” [3] [4]

Kessler Familiy History suggests that she applied rather than her husband “likely because all fixed assets owned by the family were in his wife’s name. She had acquired these by inheritance.”[5]

They arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Janet on October 7, 1751. Also on the ship were: Anna Catharina’s brother Johannes Hauswürth, Johann Nicholas Wolfe (1730-abt.1810), from Niederhochstadt and Abraham Petillion (abt.1721-bef.1800), from Winden.

By 1753, the family had settled at Tasker's Chance, now in Frederick, Maryland, where their daughter Margaret was born in June of 1753.

The last records found for him were in 1789. [6] (Source needed for exact date of January 1, 1792.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Bernhard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Bernhard:

His very faint baptism record is available on familysearch: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L92X-C938-T?i=234. Film # 004034782, image 235 of 352, 2nd record from top left. His name and the names of his parents - Nickel Kessler & Maria Magdalena - are visible. The name "Margaretha" appears near the bottom, possibly a sponsor. Maybe someone who can read German script could decipher the rest.
